GenoaInBlue - Genoa during the International Boat Show

On the occasion of its 51st edition, Genoa International Boat Show will open up to the city by launching the ‘zero edition’ of GenovaInBlu, a series of events held outside the Boat Show and forming a virtual itinerary that will connect the Show to Genoa's throbbing heart.

As part of this special programme, Genoa’s outstanding artistic and cultural heritage will be in the spotlight thanks to events, performances and unique opportunities that all citizens and tourists will be able to enjoy throughout the 9 days of the number-one Boat Show in the world.

The GenovaInBlue project is the result of the cooperation between UCINA (the Boating Industry Confederation) and Fiera di Genova (Genoa Fair & Exhibition Centre), and will directly involve the bodies making up Genoa Promotion Board, particularly Genoa Chamber of Commerce and Genoa City Council.

The very heart of the GenovaInBlu programme will be the 16th century Strada Nuova (today’s Via Garibaldi), which – together with the Palazzi dei Rolli (from Piazza della Meridiana to Piazza Fontane Marose) – has been inscribed in UNESCO's World Heritage List. During Genoa Boat Show, the magnificent courtyards and halls of Palazzo Carrega Cataldi, Palazzo della Meridiana (which is currently hosting the Liguria section of the 54th Biennial of Venice), Palazzo Lomellino, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Rosso will showcase their treasures and host a large number of special exhibitions and events.

Throughout the nine days of the Boat Show, all GenovaInBlu events will take place against a really unique setting – an artistic experimentation project by Marco Rotelli entitled Scie di luce in città (Luminous traces in town): luminous traces of poetry that will light up Via Garibaldi and Piazza De Ferrari, quoting verses by Eugenio Montale, Edoardo Sanguineti and Giorgio Caproni.

• Night-time events will make their debut with the exceptional opening of the Boat Show until 10.30 pm on the opening day, Saturday 1 October, and will then continue throughout the nine days of the Show.
• Thanks to the cooperation with the magazine Yacht&Sail (published by the RCS Group), the shops of one of Genoa’s main shopping streets – via Roma – will be “dressed up” by RCS magazines, which will unite all points of sale under the common denominator of ‘love for the sea’.  The “Yacht&Sail” street will be inaugurated on Sunday 2 October by a special cocktail party. On that night, the shops will remain open until 9.00 pm, while on the following days original events will be held in the participating points of sale and special installations will be set up in the shop windows: one of them - thanks to the cooperation with ADI (Italian Industrial Design Association) - will be the display of some projects that were recently awarded the Compasso d’oro award.
• On Thursday 6 October (and Friday 7 in the morning for schools) the hall Sala del Maggior Consiglio of Palazzo Ducale will host the performance “Disco Risorgimento” by Edoardo Sylos Labini, an initiative organised under the aegis of the Italian Prime Minister’s Office and sponsored by the Committee for the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy.
• On Friday 7 October in the evening the three floors of department store La Rinascente will be enlivened by shows, catwalks and cuisine events, while Piazza Fontane Marose will become the stage for the RIVA Gucci event, for which the luxury Gucci boutique in Via XXV Aprile will open up to the public. Still on Friday, all Genoa modern and contemporary art galleries will exceptionally stay open between 6.00 pm and midnight.
• On Saturday 8 October the GenovaInBlu programme will culminate in a fashion show organised at the fruit and vegetable market in Genova Bolzaneto, thanks to the cooperation with Genoa City Council’s Department for the Economy.

During Genoa International Boat Show, Theatre Carlo Felice will take part in the GenovaInBlu project with the ballet “Chanson”, featuring music by Aznavour, Gainsbourg, Piaf, and Becaud; moreover, the Theatre’s symphony orchestra will play some pieces during the Show’s opening night.

• As part of GenovaInBlu, UCINA’s project Navigar m’è dolce (Sweet Navigation) – aiming to spread sea culture and pleasure boating – will not only be present at the Show (with sailing trials and performances), but will also land downtown: special workshops will be organised in the mornings of Monday 3 and Friday 7 October by Acquario di Genova, Città dei Bambini, Port Center, Galata Museo del Mare and the Italian Sailing Federation at the Palazzo della Borsa (formerly the Stock Exchange).

All the initiatives will be gathered in the guide “Guida di GenovaInBlu”, which will also include a useful map of all the events taking place in Genoa during the Boat Show.

Here is a program of the opportunities offered by the city:

Galata Museo del Mare
• Submarine Nazario Sauro
The culture and history of navigation will welcome the visitors of the show at the Galata Museo del Mare museum, where it is possible to personally experience the living conditions on board of a submarine by visiting the submarine Nazario Sauro, moored in front of the museum. The visitor can start his diving by going down to the lower part of the submarine wearing a helmet for h safety and listening to an interactive guide, which automatically activates in some peculiar points during the visit to give information about the life on board. A pre-show area has been fitted on the third floor of the Museum to prepare the visit to the submarine and to allow interacting with some of the tools which are not accessible on board, due to safety reasons or for the limit space available. This amazing experience continues on the third floor of the museum with the famous ocean crossing on steamships of Italian migrants going to America, with a new opening (19th October) towards Brazil and Argentina, with an outlook on contemporary emigration/immigration.

• Yachts Portraits – The Beppe Croce Collection
The Museum hosts the area “Yachts Portraits – The Beppe Croce Collection”, which reproduces the atmosphere of an English Yacht Club of the late 19th century and the donation by the family of Ambrogio Fogar of the life raft on which the Italian sailor and the journalist of the newspaper “La Nazione” Mauro Mancini spent 74 days in 1978, after the shipwreck of the Surprise, their boat, in the Atlantic Ocean.
